Many people I've come across keep fish in various forms of tanks at home, but I've never met anyone who used them as a sustainable food source!

The Fiji College of Theology and Evangelism, however, is looking to use fish tanks as a means to raise a variety of vegetables while providing a sustainable supply of meat. Such a system is called "aquaponics" and creates a symbiotic relationship between a hydroponic garden (one that is grown without a soil medium) and a fish tank. The fish waste water  (containing various nutrients) is fed to the plants, which in turn purifies the water so that it can be returned to the fish tank. The result is a system that requires no daily watering, little (if any) plant fertilizers, and hardly any routine maintenance. The College hopes to use innovative agricultural solutions, such as these, to not only provide their students with food, but also to provide income for those in their community living in poverty.
